"per capita, minneapolis produces more rock critics than any city on earth. if you meet a rock critic who isn't from new york, there's a 33 percent chance they were raised (or once worked) in the twin cities."

why do we think this is true?

Because it is. Booyah.
minneapolis has several things that contribute to this phenomena.
1. we are the most literate metro area in the united states according to two different studies. it would make sense that a literate community would produce writers.
2. this has not been studied that i'm aware of, but i'm going to guess that we are among the most critical cities in the country as well.
3. minneapolis is obsessed with it's rock and roll history* and feels the need to defend itself as a major "scene" because many people here feel they have been given the major label shaft. if you can't play music yourself, what better way to prove your city has great music than to become a critic so you can give your town's bands great reviews whether they deserve them or not.
* husker du, prince, descendants, to name a few influential t.c. rockers. bob dylan got his start here after moving from northern minnesota.**
** that in no way means that minneapolis is currently producing music of that caliber, or that the obsession to defend ourselves is not at times ridiculously childish.
that's my two cents.
